Danville adds public pet microchip scanner at police department

Danville residents who find a lost pet now have a public microchip scanner available at the Danville Police Department.

The city says the scanner is housed in a weatherproof box mounted to a light pole along the department's circular front driveway, near the Safe Exchange Zone. Instructions on the sign explain how to use the scanner, query the chip number and contact the appropriate local number about a found animal.

The station and hardware were donated by Best Friends Animal Society, which provided three scanners, while the city's Public Works team handled the installation. Danville says the goal is to give residents a practical way to identify a chipped pet and speed reunification with its registered owner.

People using the station should follow the posted instructions and handle animals safely while arranging any next step.
