Greensboro is extending heat-safety coverage into weekends as summer conditions settle in, giving residents another public place to cool down when daytime temperatures become dangerous.
The city says the Interactive Resource Center at 407 E. Washington Street will serve as a weekend cooling center from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays in June, July and August. Weekday cooling options remain available at the IRC from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, Glenwood Together at 1310 Glenwood Avenue from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and Tiny House Community Development's HOPE Center at 360 W. Gate City Boulevard from 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday.
Greensboro also says overnight cooling support is tied to Orange Flag conditions. The city defines that trigger as a forecasted daytime temperature of at least 90 degrees with the overnight temperature not expected to fall below 70 degrees. When Orange Flag is active, the IRC can serve as an overnight cooling center from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m..
- Who is affected: People without reliable air conditioning, unsheltered residents, seniors, outdoor workers and families with heat-sensitive medical needs.
- What to know: Weekend hours are at the IRC; weekday options are split across three sites.
- Why it matters: Heat risk often rises when overnight temperatures stay high and people cannot recover after a hot day.
Residents should check city updates during heat waves because cooling-center hours and overnight activation can change with forecast conditions.
