Greensboro expands spring Lights Out for Birds campaign through May 31

The City of Greensboro announced on March 9, 2026 that it is continuing its seasonal "Lights Out for Birds" campaign during spring migration, with the voluntary window running from March 15 through May 31.

City guidance asks residents, businesses, and building managers to turn off nonessential lights between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. to reduce disorientation and window-collision risks for migratory birds using the Atlantic Flyway route.

Officials said the program also supports lower nighttime energy use and reduced light pollution, aligning with city sustainability goals while giving households and commercial property managers a clear participation schedule.

For Greensboro neighborhoods and downtown corridors, the initiative functions as both a conservation alert and a practical building-operations recommendation during peak migration weeks.
