A former Newton police officer has been sentenced to nearly 8 to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty in the shooting death of a 21-year-old motorcyclist.

According to court records, former Lt. Carlos Alverto Uribe, 29, entered a guilty plea to the lesser charge of second-degree murder after originally being charged with first-degree murder. The shooting happened June 26, 2025, after a motorcycle chase through Catawba County. Investigators with the State Bureau of Investigation determined 21-year-old Camden Childers had led officers on a chase before riding into a cul-de-sac off County Home Road in Conover, reaching a point where he could no longer get away. Court documents say Uribe's vehicle made contact with the motorcycle, knocking Childers to the ground, and body-camera footage showed Uribe approaching and kicking Childers in the stomach before a gunshot was heard, with Childers heard saying he was shot.

The District Attorney's Office said the body-camera video showed no evidence Childers had a gun or attempted to reach for one.
