A hearing is scheduled for Tuesday on a rezoning request covering 284.9 acres of land in Randolph County.

The land is along Old Walker Mill Road, St. Peters Church Road and US 220 Business North. The landowners submitted their rezoning application in June, and the request is to rezone the property to Heavy Industrial.

Many people in Randolph County have taken to social media to express concern that the rezoning could ultimately lead to the building of a data center. The county says a data processing center is not currently permitted in the zoning jurisdiction, and that building a data center would require a conditional district rezoning request and applicable review. The Randolph County Planning Board is scheduled to consider the request Tuesday.
