A man has been sentenced to prison for the Lynchburg killing of a cab driver in 2024, according to Commonwealth's Attorney Bethany Harrison.

Dabney Maurice Thomas, Jr., was sentenced to serve 43 years for Second-Degree Murder and the Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and was ordered to submit to three years of supervised probation upon his release. Harrison recounted that on Feb. 9, 2024, Lynchburg Police responded to Morson Street between Cobbs Street and Mosby Avenue for a shots fired call. Officers found 62-year-old Carroll Mack lying unresponsive on the side of the road near the passenger side of an unoccupied Allied taxi. He had a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was pronounced dead after being taken to a hospital.

A backyard surveillance camera captured the events leading to Mack's death: the video shows Mack stop his cab, walk to the rear passenger side and open the door, repeatedly telling his passenger to get out. Thomas eventually got out, pulled out a firearm and approached Mack, who repeatedly told him he did not want to go to jail and to put the gun away while backing away. The two struggled and both fell to the ground, where a single gunshot was heard, and Thomas then stood up, retrieved a backpack and walked away. A search of his father's home produced a gun hidden above a closet, and forensic analysis confirmed it was used in the shooting. Thomas pleaded guilty in August 2024.
