A new study ranks Winston-Salem among the U.S. cities where residents spend the largest share of their income on groceries.

The WalletHub study, published Wednesday, ranks the top 100 largest cities by the percentage of income residents spend on groceries annually, on average, with Detroit in the top spot at 4.03% of household income. Residents who spend the largest share of their income on groceries also tend to have lower incomes, making them especially vulnerable to rising prices. Americans spent an average of 12.9% of their pretax incomes on eating out and at home in 2024, but that share was 33% for the one-fifth of U.S. households with the lowest earnings, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

With the average cost of a pound of ground beef nearing $7, up from under $3.80 in 2019, experts say shoppers should take advantage of sales and coupons, buy generic items and buy in bulk if possible, and use a credit card that gives good rewards on groceries and pay it off in full each month. Analysts say shoppers are already changing habits, with discounters like Costco, Walmart and Aldi gaining market share from major grocery chains and store-brand sales reaching a record $282.8 billion last year.
