A suspect believed responsible for the shooting of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon after a multi-hour standoff at a south Charlotte apartment complex.

CMPD identified Dionte Antonio McCracking, 28, as a suspect in the overnight Sept. 9 shooting in the 1200 block of Enderly Road, then located him barricaded inside an apartment at the South Oak Crossing apartments on Kings Ridge Drive near East Arrowood. Officers evacuated surrounding apartments, and around 2:45 p.m. McCracking was taken into custody by K9 and SWAT officers. He has been charged with attempted murder on a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a felon, and Chief Estella Patterson said he also has outstanding burglary warrants for unrelated charges. The incident began when an officer responded to a suspicious vehicle call around 12:30 a.m.

McCracking is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
