— Apparently, knowing where Friday’s Deli is located is now part of the unofficial qualification process for Martinsville City Council — at least according to Henry County Collinsville District Supervisor Chris Lawless.

In remarks about Martinsville City Council candidate Michael Green, Lawless didn't hold back, offering a blunt assessment of the candidate's background, familiarity with the area and whether he understands the community he hopes to represent.

“The dude is way too white,” Lawless said, adding that Green doesn't understand what the area is about.

And then came the local geography test.

Lawless claimed Green didn't even know where Friday's Deli was located — a detail that apparently helped seal his opinion of the candidate.

The conversation turned to people moving into the area without understanding the community they're moving into. Lawless contrasted Green with Martinsville Mayor L.C. Jones, saying Jones grew up locally and understands what he's dealing with.

So forget the campaign signs, the talking points and the candidate forums. Does he know where Friday's Deli is?

Lawless' comments raise questions about what should matter when evaluating a candidate for public office: familiarity with the community, policy positions, experience — or where someone stands on the local deli directory.
