Baby girl airlifted to trauma center after being struck by gunfire while being held by her mother
DANVILLE, Va. — A 1-year-old child is recovering after being caught in a hail of gunfire early Monday morning at a Danville apartment complex.
The Danville Police Department said officers were called to the G building of the Purdum Woods apartment complex at 1575 Richmond Boulevard shortly after 1:23 a.m. Monday, Sept. 7, following a 911 call reporting multiple shots fired and a child being struck.
When officers arrived, they found a 1-year-old female suffering from a gunshot wound to her lower body.
Officers and first responders immediately provided medical assistance before the child was airlifted to a trauma facility.
Police said she is currently listed in stable condition.
BABY WAS BEING HELD BY HER MOTHER
According to investigators, the shooting happened at approximately 1:21 a.m.
Police say multiple individuals fired shots toward a group of people standing in the breezeway of the G building in what appeared to be a targeted attack.
Gunfire was also returned from the G building breezeway area.
And that's when an innocent 1-year-old became a victim.
Police said the child was being held by her mother and was standing in the G building breezeway when she was struck by the gunfire.
The suspects fled the area on foot.
Two apartments inside the G building were also struck by gunfire.
Thankfully, despite the number of rounds fired, police said the child is currently stable.
But the question remains:
Who thought opening fire around an apartment complex was a good idea?
POLICE LOOKING FOR SUSPECTS
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
Danville Police are asking anyone who may have information about the shooting — or anyone with surveillance video from the area — to come forward.
Investigators are particularly interested in video or information from areas between Purdum Road, Bradley Road and side streets leading back toward North Main Street.

Police are asking residents in the area to check doorbell cameras, security systems and other surveillance footage that could have captured people fleeing the area following the shooting.
ONE-YEAR-OLD INJURED — INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
The shooting is being investigated as an active criminal case.
While police believe the gunfire was directed at a particular group, the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and the identities of those involved have not been released.
For now, the focus is on the little girl who had absolutely nothing to do with whatever dispute led to the gunfire.
She was simply being held by her mother.
And somehow, in the middle of someone else's apparent beef, a 1-year-old ended up getting shot.
Danville Police are asking the public to help identify whoever pulled the trigger.
