Bedford Home Suffers Major Damage
BEDFORD, Va. — They were supposed to be cutting down a tree.
Instead, the tree came down — right through a house.
The Bedford Fire Department was dispatched to the 1100 block of Rock Castle Road in the Town of Bedford after receiving a report that a tree had fallen into a residential structure.
When Rescue 1 arrived, firefighters found a large pine tree that a tree company had been attempting to remove had fallen into the home, causing major structural damage.
And with a damaged house and a large tree involved, firefighters quickly determined this wasn't going to be a simple "cut it up and haul it away" operation.
The Rescue 1 crew immediately ordered employees of the tree company to get off the roof because of safety concerns.
Firefighters then began stabilizing the damaged structure using Paratech struts.
Because crews knew the operation would be extensive, Special Operations Command (SOC) was requested.
Companies from Boonsboro, Forest and Moneta responded to assist.
Firefighters worked for approximately three hours to safely secure the structure and prevent further damage or collapse.
In the end, the home was deemed condemned.
Thankfully, despite the significant damage and dangerous conditions, no injuries were reported.
So, what started as a tree-removal job quickly turned into a major fire department operation — proving once again that sometimes a tree doesn't exactly cooperate with the removal plan.
The tree won this round.
