Dr. Jeffrey Kaplan, an associate professor in the Department of Philosophy at UNC Greensboro, has built a career studying life's most profound questions, but what first made him seriously wonder had nothing to do with academics.

His mother, Deborah Heidi Kaplan, is remembered as a devoted wife and mother who raised four children in Paramus, New Jersey, and worked professionally for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the agency that oversaw the World Trade Center. Jeffrey, the oldest of the four children, described her as a loving, nurturing mother who was very smart, very good at math and very analytical, with a civil engineering degree, the field that deals with bridges, tunnels and skyscrapers.

She was among the thousands killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, and her son now teaches and reflects on the questions her loss raised for him.
