Mable Pullen, 110, has been recognized as the oldest person in Virginia and honored by the town of Rocky Mount with a day in her name.
Pullen was born in 1916 and has nine children, 32 grandchildren and more than 70 great-grandchildren. "I tell people, my mom's 110, they can't believe it. They can't believe it," said her son, William Pullen. Family members said each grandchild grew up convinced they were her favorite, and described Pullen as tough and selfless. "You only had to get in trouble once. And then you'd never get in trouble again," said her grandson Hamza Iman. "She was a giving person. She would give you her last dime, or she'd give you her last biscuit," said her daughter, Janet Johnson.
The town of Rocky Mount proclaimed Oct. 14, 2026 as Mable Pullen Day. "We proudly designate October 14th, 2026, as Mable Pullen Day in the town of Rocky Mount," said Mayor C. Holland Perdue. Johnson said her mother would not have expected the honor. "The way that she was treated in her younger days, she wouldn't believe this now. But she would be happy. She would be so joyful," Johnson said.
