North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is warning gas retailers that they must pass along savings from the temporary suspension of the state's gas tax.

The state's 41-cent-per-gallon gas tax on gasoline and diesel was suspended Oct. 10 and will remain suspended through Nov. 30 under a law approved by the General Assembly and signed by Gov. Josh Stein. Jackson sent letters Tuesday to gas retailers and distributors informing them that the law requires the tax savings to be passed on to customers. "If gas stations see their costs drop by 41 cents per gallon but don't pass that along to drivers, that's a massive windfall for these companies instead of relief for families," Jackson said. "My job is to make sure the savings reach the families."

Drivers should not expect prices to fall by 41 cents immediately at every gas station, since stations pay the tax when they receive a new fuel delivery and many are still selling gas purchased before the suspension took effect. State officials said most stations should receive new fuel deliveries within about a week. Jackson also launched N.C. Fuel Check, a new reporting system that lets the Department of Justice review publicly available gas price data and look for outliers. Drivers can submit complaints through the reporting page or by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
