October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to honor the fighters, celebrate the survivors, remember those we have lost, and stand beside everyone whose life has been touched by this terrible disease. Sheriff Billy Parker and the entire Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office stand united with those fighting breast cancer. We know that this journey is not one that you should have to face alone. Breast cancer has affected so many of our family members, friends, coworkers, and loved ones, reminding us just how important it is to support one another. Together, we are stronger! Today, we want to shine a special light on one of our very own, Kayla Dix, who has shown us all what true strength, courage, and determination look like. Kayla has been a valued member of the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office for five years, serving in our Civil Records Division. On October 2, 2025, Kayla received the life-changing news that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Just 20 days later, on October 22, she began her first chemotherapy treatment and started a journey that would test her strength in ways few can imagine. Since her diagnosis, Kayla has undergone surgery and radiation treatments and continues her immunotherapy journey, with her final treatment scheduled for December 4, 2026. Through it all, Kayla has continued to work full-time, facing each day with a beautiful smile, a courageous spirit, and a determination that inspires everyone around her. Even during some of her most difficult days, she has continued to show up, push forward, and remind us all that courage isn't about never facing hardships but it's about fighting a good fight in the face of it. Kayla, you are our SUPER GIRL! Her strength is fueled by the love and unwavering support of her faithful husband and their two children, who stand beside her through every challenge. The love of their family reminds us that family, faith, and a strong support system can make a great difference during life's most difficult battles. Kayla, you may be the one fighting this battle, but please know that you are never fighting alone. You have an entire Sheriff’s Office family standing behind you, cheering you on, praying for you, and celebrating every victory with you. Your strength and determination have made a lasting impression on this agency and you are a true inspiration to everyone facing their own cancer journey. To every fighter, survivor, and family standing beside a loved one: We stand with you. We believe in you. And we are stronger together. Keep fighting, Kayla! Your RCSO family loves you and is proud to call you one of our own!
