On Sept. 11, 2001, Jillian Mors was in the 10th grade, and her teachers at Forbush High School in Yadkin County comforted her and her classmates as they watched the attacks on the country.

Now Mors is a teacher herself at Hanes Magnet School in Winston-Salem, working with 8th grade social studies students who are a generation removed from the events of 9/11. As an educator, Mors says it is important for students to understand this part of the country's history, and she teaches the stories of people being inspired to reach out and help each other, from blood drives and the boat lift out of Manhattan to the plane people of Gander, Canada, where residents opened churches and homes to stranded travelers.

Counselor Valerie Jones also offers advice on how parents can share what happened on 9/11 with young children, recommending they simplify the story for them.
