Seventeen Greensboro Fire Department firefighters traveled to Asheville and Buncombe County over the weekend, prepared to assist with Hurricane Isaias response and potential emergencies.

"Our role there was to really respond to the whole western branch of North Carolina, if there was an emergency," Assistant Chief Bryan Vickery said. Vickery explained the team was ready for worst-case scenarios, including landslides, structural collapses and loss of life. Fortunately, the team did not have to respond to any major emergencies during the weekend. "When the impact is not as large or significant as the anticipation, that's a huge relief for us," Vickery said.

The Greensboro rescue team has responded to emergencies across the country, including as far north as Vermont and to Florida and Texas. Vickery said those experiences help the team better serve its local community, applying lessons learned back in Greensboro. Even without diving into danger, their presence provided comfort, with people at a gas station coming up to express their gratitude that the team was there and ready to act.
