The Food and Drug Administration reported Wednesday that it is investigating a multistate salmonella outbreak linked to recalled broccoli sprouts.

The CDC and state partners found 22 cases in four states, including Washington, which has the highest number, followed by Montana, Idaho and Utah. Two people were hospitalized, and there have been no reported deaths. Salmonella symptoms can include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, typically starting six hours to six days after infection and lasting four to seven days. People reported feeling ill between July 6 and Aug. 26, and 89% of the 19 people interviewed said they ate broccoli sprouts.

Evergreen Fresh Sprouts issued a recall for its broccoli sprouts in plastic bags or clamshell containers, and the CDC advised people not to eat, sell or serve sprouts with expiration dates of Sept. 7, 9, 11, 14 and 16.
