The Greensboro Science Center is one step closer to welcoming new species like sloths, spider monkeys and clouded leopards.

Construction on the Greensboro Biodome, part of the center's new area called Expedition Rainforest, started early this year, and officials expect the new area to open next fall, just in time for the science center's 70th anniversary. Plans for Expedition Rainforest were revealed in 2024. The Biodome will be five stories tall and the length of a football field, designed as an immersive experience that transports guests into a tropical rainforest climate, with half the space dedicated to South America and half focused on Asia. It will also serve as home to reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

The steel frame is fully in place, and crews are working to add a roof that uses ETFE to provide sunlight and UV protection for plants, a material often used to keep greenhouses warm and humid. Expedition Rainforest will also include the new Aquatic Rehabilitation and Conservation Center next door, working to rehabilitate and conserve aquatic species. Marketing manager Bekah Robinson said the science center is always evolving and adding something new. The center is also expanding its parking lot and expects that work to be completed in time for Winter Wonder Lights.
