NightFlight Expedition at Dollywood Gets Rave Reviews Ahead of Opening

NightFlight Expedition at Dollywood Gets Rave Reviews Ahead of Opening A new attraction at Dollywood is already generating plenty of excitement ahead of its public debut.

NightFlight Expedition is scheduled to open to the public on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, following months of construction, speculation and secrecy surrounding exactly what riders would experience inside the massive attraction.

The first reviews from media preview riders are overwhelmingly positive.

The attraction, built around a Mack Rides Rocking Boat, combines several different ride experiences — including flight, river rapids, roller-coaster elements and a lake voyage — inside a roughly 44,000-square-foot enclosed building in Wildwood Grove.

It is also the first completely enclosed Rocking Boat attraction.

Riders: “I was blown away”

Coaster101 writers Andrew, John and Kyle were among those who got an early ride.

Andrew called it another strong family attraction for Dollywood, praising the combination of screens, practical sets, coaster track and water elements.

John said he was “blown away” by what Dollywood accomplished, describing the attraction as immersive, fun, well-paced and visually impressive.

Kyle focused on the artistic and storytelling elements, particularly the use of bioluminescence, bold colors and music throughout the experience.

The water may be the biggest surprise

One of the biggest surprises for the reviewers was the intensity of the water portion.

The ride transitions from coaster track into a rapids experience — something reviewers described as seamless and unlike anything they had experienced before.

And yes, you can get wet.

However, don't expect to walk off soaked.

Riders reported some splashes, particularly in the front row. Those sitting farther back appeared to stay considerably drier.

Is it actually a roller coaster?

The reviewers say yes.

Although the traditional coaster portion represents only part of the overall experience, the attraction features two drops — one backward and one forward.

Andrew counted it as a coaster credit, while John said it is absolutely a roller coaster despite incorporating numerous other ride elements.

The finale gets high praise

One of the favorite portions for reviewers was the finale at Secret Lake.

Lighting, music and water effects come together to create what John described as a fitting conclusion to the expedition.

Another standout moment is the transition from the coaster track directly into the rapids.

The queue is part of the attraction

The experience begins well before riders board the vehicles.

Reviewers praised the heavily themed queue, saying the level of detail increases as guests move closer to the loading station.

There's also a pre-show area that introduces the story surrounding the attraction's bioluminescence.

And there was another feature reviewers weren't shy about appreciating:

Air conditioning.

Inside a massive enclosed building during a hot Tennessee summer, the climate-controlled queue apparently earned some of the strongest reviews.

What about the ride vehicles?

The vehicles are officially called “Smoky Mountain Tracker Vehicles.”

The reviewers were able to experience them during the media preview, with the vehicles serving as the centerpiece of the attraction's unusual combination of coaster, water and dark-ride elements.

Dollywood also maintains a strict no-recording-device policy on the attraction. Media members were required to place their phones in locking pouches before boarding.

That means much of NightFlight Expedition's experience remains something riders will simply have to see for themselves.

And judging from the early reactions, that's probably not a bad thing.

NightFlight Expedition opens to the public Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026.
