Schools in Franklin County are no longer under lockdown or hold-in-place status after a Wednesday threat that has been deemed unsubstantiated, according to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office confirmed a heavy police presence at Franklin County High School on Oct. 7. The High School, the Franklin Center, the Middle School, Gereau Center, Rocky Mount Elementary and Christian Heritage Academy were all placed on lockdown or hold-in-place status while deputies investigated, and officials said all students and faculty were safe. Heritage High School and Heritage Elementary in Lynchburg were also on a hold status while Lynchburg police and schools investigated a potential threat.
Campbell County authorities also reported a potential threat at Altavista Combined School and asked the public to stay away from the area, and Amherst County schools went into secure status Wednesday morning after a threat at Amherst Middle School. That status was lifted with the instructional day resuming as normal after the sheriff's office, Amherst Town Police and Virginia State Police completed a thorough search with several K9 units and found no threat or suspicious items.
