Doctors and Liberty University students are offering free memory screenings every Thursday morning at West Lynchburg Baptist Church, testing attention and thinking skills to check for signs of memory loss or dementia.

Research shows 50% to 80% of older adults are concerned about their memory, and Dr. David Crews, a licensed clinical neuropsychologist leading the effort, said the goal of the screenings is to provide peace of mind. He said the screenings provide more testing than a typical doctor visit. "They typically do not have the time to do a comprehensive screening of cognitive functioning," Crews said. "There's a relative absence of people, like myself, neuropsychologists in the area."

Staff also measure blood pressure and body mass index, which can help indicate whether someone has dementia. "If we can prevent a disease process from happening, that's the ideal and you can save a lot of people from suffering and economic costs," Crews said. The screenings are funded by Liberty University, and some of the university's students are taking part to advance their careers. Those who want a screening are asked to call ahead at 434-515-0445.
