Martinsville offers identity monitoring after cyber incident

Martinsville residents and city employees have a new public-safety notice to review after the city posted details of a cybersecurity incident that disrupted municipal computer systems.

The city says its technology team became aware of the disruption on or about March 25, 2026, then moved to stop the incident and brought in outside cybersecurity experts. Martinsville says its systems are now secure and operations have returned to normal, but the review found that personal information may have been accessed.

The types of information named in the notice include names, addresses, dates of birth, driver's license numbers and Social Security numbers. For city employees, the notice also points to possible benefit enrollment information, health insurance numbers and medical information that employees voluntarily shared. The city says it has no evidence of misuse connected to the incident.

Martinsville says it is cooperating with state and federal law enforcement, including the FBI Cyber Crimes Division, the Virginia State Police Cyber Fusion Center and the Department of Homeland Security's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. The city is also offering free identity monitoring for concerned citizens or employees who email monitoring@martinsvilleva.gov.

Anyone with questions can call the incident assistance line at 866-566-3595 Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Central time, through August 31, 2026. The practical advice for affected households is to watch bank and benefits accounts, review credit reports and report suspicious activity quickly.
