Flood Watch in effect for Surry and Patrick counties through Sunday evening

SURRY AND PATRICK COUNTIES - The National Weather Service in Blacksburg says a Flood Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, through Sunday evening, Oct. 11, for Surry County in North Carolina and Patrick County in Virginia.

The watch also covers Alleghany and Wilkes counties in North Carolina and Carroll and Floyd counties in Virginia. Heavy rainfall could produce localized flooding, especially near creeks, low-water crossings, poor-drainage areas and roads that become covered by water.

A Flood Watch means conditions could support flooding; it does not mean flooding has been confirmed at a specific location. Drivers should never enter a water-covered road. Turn around, do not drown, and follow any later Flood Warning or local emergency-management direction.

The same National Weather Service outlook says severe storms Sunday afternoon and evening could bring damaging winds and an isolated tornado farther east, including Stokes, Rockingham, Caswell, Henry and Pittsylvania counties. Residents should keep alerts enabled and check updated forecasts before travel or outdoor plans.
