Virginia State Police activate I-81 speed cameras in Roanoke and Botetourt work zones beginning May 11

Drivers on Interstate 81 through Roanoke and Botetourt County have a new enforcement tool to account for starting May 11, 2026. Virginia State Police activated speed safety cameras in active work zones between mile markers 143 and 150, covering a stretch of highway where construction activity has been ongoing. The cameras are triggered by vehicles traveling above posted work-zone speed limits, and citations are mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle rather than issued during a traffic stop.

Speed camera programs in construction zones are authorized under state law as a response to the elevated risk that workers and drivers face when vehicles travel faster than posted limits through active sites. Virginia has expanded the program to additional corridors as the state continues major highway work under multi-year transportation budgets. I-81 between Roanoke and Botetourt is among the segments seeing sustained activity that creates the legal and practical conditions for camera deployment.

The citation process under the Virginia work-zone camera program differs from a traditional moving violation. Penalties are civil rather than criminal, and points are not typically added to a driver's record for a first camera citation. The registered owner of a vehicle captured exceeding the limit receives a notice by mail with options to pay or contest the citation within a specified window. Violations that go unaddressed can escalate to additional collection steps.

For commuters and freight carriers on I-81, the practical instruction is straightforward: reduce speed through the posted work zone before reaching mile marker 143 and maintain compliance through mile marker 150. Variable message signs and posted speed limit signs in the corridor mark the active zone boundaries. State police said the cameras will remain in operation for the duration of active construction in that segment.
