Roanoke put education governance on the public calendar early this year by opening applications for two upcoming School Board vacancies. In a January 6 notice, the City Clerk's Office said the three-year terms will begin July 1, 2026, and run through June 30, 2029, with applications due by 5 p.m. on March 10.
The city said the seats are tied to the terms currently held by Christopher T. Link and Elizabeth C.S. Jamison, with Jamison not eligible for reappointment. That means the appointment process is not a routine paperwork exercise. It is a real opportunity to shape who helps govern Roanoke City Public Schools during the next several years.
Because school boards influence budgets, policy direction, leadership oversight and community trust in public education, these openings matter beyond school administration. They also arrive at a time when school board service in many communities carries more scrutiny and more expectations than it did even a few years ago.
Roanoke residents interested in the process were directed to an online application and trustee-duty materials through the City Clerk's Office. For the valley's school-watch audience, the bigger story is simple: decisions about classrooms and district direction often begin with appointment windows like this long before any major policy debate reaches a meeting agenda.
