Roanoke is in line for a new inpatient rehabilitation hospital through a joint venture between Select Medical Corporation and Carilion Clinic.
The companies announced May 21 that they plan to build and operate a new 50-bed Carilion Rehabilitation Hospital in Roanoke. Select Medical will be the majority owner and manager of the facility.
The planned hospital is slated for 9th Street SE, with construction beginning in spring 2026 and a target opening in spring or summer 2028. The announcement says Carilion Roanoke Community Hospital will stop operating its existing 34-bed acute rehabilitation unit when the new hospital opens.
The project is focused on inpatient rehabilitative care for people recovering function and mobility after serious illness or injury, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and other neurological conditions.
For the Roanoke desk, the story matters on two tracks: health-care capacity and construction planning. The new facility would expand dedicated rehabilitation beds in the city, but the practical patient-care shift would not arrive until the 2028 opening window.
