**ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va.** – Virginia State Police are currently investigating a fatal accident that occurred on March 13 in Rockbridge County, resulting in the death of a man and two cows.

The incident took place just before 7 p.m. when a 2007 Chevrolet 3500 pickup truck, towing a trailer with two cows, was traveling north on Glasgow Highway. The vehicle veered off the right side of the road, collided with an embankment, and subsequently flipped over, detaching from the trailer.

While the trailer stayed on the roadway, the truck continued off the left side and into a ditch. Tragically, a passenger in the truck, 77-year-old Rodney F. Unrue from Monroe, was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities noted that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The driver, 81-year-old Douglas N. Layne, also from Monroe, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. Like Unrue, Layne was not wearing a seatbelt, according to police reports.

The crash also resulted in the death of one cow, while the other had to be euthanized due to its injuries.

Virginia State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.
