WEATHER
Tropical Storm Debby has unleashed torrential rain and fierce winds across Florida, resulting in at least four fatalities. As the storm advances towards the Eastern Seaboard, it poses a significant flooding threat to several historic Southern cities.
The National Hurricane Center has issued warnings of record-setting rainfall, with some areas potentially receiving up to 30 inches (76 centimeters), raising the risk of flash flooding. Cities like Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, are on high alert as they brace for the incoming deluge, while central and northern Florida could see up to 18 inches (46 centimeters) of rain.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis cautioned that the impact of the storm will persist even as it moves into Georgia. He emphasized the importance of vigilance as waterways in Georgia overflow and send additional water southward into Florida. “It is a very saturating, wet storm,” DeSantis stated during a briefing at the state’s emergency operations center, indicating that residents should prepare for ongoing threats for the upcoming week.
