As Tropical Storm Debby approaches Virginia, Roanoke City is taking proactive measures to enhance safety and reduce flooding risks through a series of comprehensive Flood Mitigation Projects.

One notable initiative is currently taking place on Meadowbrook Road NW, where the city has acquired and demolished six homes located in a floodplain. Civil Engineers  s highlighted that these properties were identified as the highest flood risk along the Peters Creek corridor. This demolition marks the first phase of a larger project aimed at improving the area's flood management.

In addition to the Meadowbrook Road initiative, Roanoke is undertaking similar projects, including the demolition of the Ramada Inn on Franklin Road and properties near Lick Run. McWilliams emphasized the need for effective urban stormwater management, noting that increased storm frequency results in runoff that local rivers and streams struggle to handle. "Utilizing vacant areas as floodplains is crucial for diverting water away from high-density, high-use areas," he explained.

Furthermore, the city is assessing upgrades to its storm drainage systems in downtown Roanoke, an area historically prone to flooding.

These flood mitigation efforts are funded by FEMA grants, with all properties acquired at fair market value through voluntary agreements, with no eminent domain actions taken.
