Danville Regional Airport is being prepared for a planned Air Care Eagle medical helicopter base, a project intended to expand emergency air-transport options in Southside Virginia.
Danville City Council approved the operator's permit in August. WDBJ reported Aug. 12 that Air Methods, working with HCA Virginia, planned to station a helicopter at the airport; temporary crew housing and utility work were underway, while a permanent modular building was expected in spring 2027.
Once operational, the service is expected to provide 24/7 coverage for Danville, Pittsylvania County and other Southside localities. WDBJ reported that the Danville Life Saving Crew had begun integration training with the new team, and HCA said the base would give local EMS another option for transporting critically ill or injured patients, including to LewisGale Medical Center in Salem.
The public reporting describes a planned service, not confirmation that the base is fully operational. Residents and responders should rely on Danville, HCA, Air Methods and local EMS updates for launch timing.
