Pittsylvania County cleanup week set Sept. 28-Oct. 3

Pittsylvania County residents, families, civic groups and other volunteers can take part in the county's semi-annual Keep It Clean campaign during the week of Sept. 28 through Oct. 3, 2026. Participants may choose local areas or roadways for a cleanup, making the effort useful for groups that want to work close to home.

The county says cleanup activity may be completed on any day and at any time during that week. The campaign will have a coordinated supply and reporting period on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to noon, when volunteers can pick up bags, vests and grabbers at district locations. Supplies are first-come, first-served, and volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves and other tools.

Pickup and reporting locations include Gretna Fire and Rescue for the Banister District; Windy Acres Nursery in Gretna for Callands-Gretna; Haymore Garden Center on Franklin Turnpike in Danville for Chatham-Blairs; Ringgold Fire and Rescue for Dan River; Hurt Town Office at Roosevelt Mattox Park for Staunton River; Brosville United Methodist Church on Martinsville Highway for Tunstall; and Walker's Roadside Grill on Meadowview Drive for Westover.

Volunteers must complete the county sign-up form, waiver and VDOT safety video. Groups supervising youth ages 10 to 17 must provide one adult for every six children, and children under 10 may not participate. The county advises volunteers to wear safety gear, walk against traffic on roadsides, avoid sharp objects, chemicals and other unsafe litter, and keep filled bags at 50 pounds or less. Cleanup reports can be sent to district representatives so the county can compile results for future grant opportunities.
