Danville Police issued a public fraud alert Friday after reports of scam calls using the police department's likeness, personnel names, and other government references to demand money or personal information.
The department said on Friday, July 24, 2026, that the callers are trying to convince people to make payments through gift cards, wire transfers, cash withdrawals, Bitcoin or other money machines, and similar third-party methods. Police said these requests are scams.
Danville Police reminded residents that law enforcement agencies, courts, government offices, and legitimate organizations do not call people to demand payment over the phone. The department also warned that legitimate entities will not tell someone to withdraw cash and meet at a location to exchange money in person.
