Danville urges voluntary water conservation as drought continues

Danville is asking water customers to cut back on indoor and outdoor use as dry conditions continue across the region.

In a July 16 notice, the city said the Roanoke Drought Evaluation Region—which includes Danville—had reached drought emergency status. The notice cited rainfall at 57% of normal for that point in the year, along with below-normal groundwater, streamflow and reservoir levels. Those figures are the city’s measurements as reported in that notice and may change as conditions evolve.

Danville Utilities said the conservation request is voluntary and does not signal an interruption in water service or a change in drinking-water quality. The city said it temporarily shut down the JTI Fountain at Main Street Plaza and Riverfront Park’s decorative fountain, while the Riverfront spray ground and the Ballou Park, Third Avenue Park and Doyle Thomas Park splash pads remain open.

Residents can help by watering before 10 a.m. or after 7 p.m., repairing visible leaks, taking shorter showers, running full loads of laundry and dishes, and using a broom instead of a hose on driveways and sidewalks. The city also said Parks and Recreation would reduce irrigation run times by 25% and rotate watering across parks and athletic fields.
