Greensboro workforce governance proposal moves into formal state review

Greensboro's proposed change to how Guilford County workforce services are administered has entered the state's formal review process, but it is not approved yet.

The City said on July 18, 2026, that it had submitted a letter of intent to the North Carolina Works Commission and was finalizing an application requested by the North Carolina Department of Commerce. The proposal would move administrative oversight of the Guilford County Workforce Development Area from the City to the Piedmont Triad Regional Council, with the stated goal of better reflecting the regional nature of the Triad economy.

The practical point for residents and employers is continuity: the City said GuilfordWorks and its staff will continue normal operations while the review proceeds, and workforce services will continue without interruption. If the application is approved and all required actions are completed, the earliest transition date would be Oct. 1, 2026.

Job seekers, employers and community partners should keep using GuilfordWorks and NCWorks resources while watching for the NCWorks Commission's decision and any implementation details.
