Guilford County is warning residents and businesses involved in rezoning matters about a phishing scam that impersonates the Guilford County Planning Board.
The county says the scam email asks recipients to make a payment to settle an invoice and includes an attachment that appears to be infected with malware. Officials say the message comes from guilfordcountync.gov@usa.com, not from a real county government email address.
Anyone who receives the email should not click the attachment, according to the county. The recommended action is to report the message as phishing through the email provider and delete it.
For Greensboro and Guilford County property owners, the alert is especially relevant during active rezoning or development-review processes, when an invoice-looking message can appear plausible. The safest verification step is to contact county planning or permitting staff through known official phone numbers or website links, not through a suspicious email thread.
