North Carolina launches council to align defense innovation with future Triad jobs

North Carolina has launched a statewide advisory council aimed at connecting research, advanced manufacturing, technology and workforce assets to emerging defense and national-security opportunities.

Announced July 9 by Gov. Josh Stein and the N.C. Department of Commerce, NC ALIGN — the North Carolina Advisory Leaders for Innovation Growth in National Security — will bring together leaders from industry, higher education, state government and national-security organizations. Commerce says the council will clarify strategic opportunities, improve visibility of the state's capabilities, strengthen coordination and build relationships with federal partners.

The timing matters in the Piedmont Triad, where the state has already broken ground on JetZero's planned commercial-airplane manufacturing facility at Piedmont Triad International Airport. That project carries a commitment of more than 14,500 aerospace manufacturing jobs over time. NC ALIGN is not a grant program and will not award funding; its role is to help turn individual projects and research strengths into a more coordinated pipeline.

For Triad manufacturers, researchers, colleges and technology companies, the practical watch is how Commerce's capability assessments and technology road maps identify areas where local suppliers and training programs can compete for future federal or private investment. Organizations interested in the state's defense-innovation ecosystem can follow NC Commerce's NC ALIGN and OSTI updates and review the partners named in the announcement.
