State historical marker for Dry Bridge School is approved for Martinsville

State historical marker for Dry Bridge School is approved for Martinsville 2021
Martinsville
In 2021 Virginia approved a state historical marker for Dry Bridge School, a Rosenwald school for Black students, to stand on East Church Street in Martinsville, with a dedication planned for October 2.
The Virginia Board of Historic Resources approved the marker text on March 18, 2021, and the Department of Historic Resources announced a public dedication for Saturday, October 2, 2021. The marker text says Henry County opened a new Dry Bridge School in 1928 to replace the original school, after a School Improvement League led by the Rev. W. F. Geter campaigned for it (the National Register record gives circa 1930). The Julius Rosenwald Fund, the community and public money paid for the school, which served grades one through eight. The city annexed the area in 1948, the school became East Martinsville School, and it closed in 1968 as Martinsville desegregated its schools.
