Ross Chastain's wall ride at Martinsville sends him to NASCAR's Championship 4 2022
Martinsville
On October 30, 2022, Ross Chastain rode the wall on the final lap at Martinsville Speedway to advance to NASCAR's Championship 4, in a move nicknamed the Hail Melon.
Chastain was two points behind Denny Hamlin for the last transfer spot when he shifted into fifth gear on the backstretch, pressed his car against the wall with the throttle down, and passed five cars, including Hamlin, on the last lap. His 18.845-second lap broke the previous Cup Series track record of 18.954 seconds at Martinsville. Christopher Bell won the race, and Bell, Joey Logano, Chase Elliott and Chastain advanced to the title race at Phoenix. A NASCAR spokesperson said the move was within the rule book.
