Martinsville City Council votes to end town reversion effort

On January 10, 2023, Martinsville City Council voted 3-2 to end the process of reverting from a city to a town, so the city will remain independent.
Mayor L.C. Jones, who voted to end the effort, said continuing would only drain more money. Council member Chad Martin opposed the vote and said the council acted too hastily. The city had spent more than $1 million on legal costs, and in April 2022 it had taken the reversion dispute to the Virginia Supreme Court.
