A North Carolina State Highway Patrol sergeant has been indicted on first-degree murder in the shooting death of a Cumberland County sheriff's captain, nearly six months after the deadly confrontation at a Hope Mills home.

A Cumberland County grand jury returned a true bill against Sgt. Nekime Oxendine in the death of Capt. Adam Bean, and Oxendine was denied bond after an evidentiary hearing Wednesday. A judge also issued a safekeeping order allowing Oxendine to be transferred from the Cumberland County Detention Center to the Moore County Detention Center for security reasons. Newly obtained search warrants say the shooting happened March 27 at the Hope Mills home of Tara Whitman, who had previously been in a long-term relationship with Bean, moved out in December 2025, and had recently resumed a romantic relationship with Oxendine, who she had also been involved with before Bean.

Oxendine is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
