A teen charged in connection with the shooting of 10 people at Royal Banquet Hall in Greensboro had his first court appearance on Wednesday.

Greensboro Police Chief Kamran Afzal announced Tuesday that Taiwan Howard Jr., 19, of Greensboro, had been charged with ten counts of felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injuries and one count of felony discharging a firearm within an enclosure to incite fear. Howard had been in the Guilford County Jail since Aug. 13 on unrelated charges when he was charged in connection with the August shooting. In court, the District Attorney's office went over the facts of the case, saying witnesses heard 12 shots go off that night, some victims had to get surgery and one victim was hit in the lip.

Howard's grandmother spoke for him in court, describing him as a loving grandson who stood up for people who were being bullied, and his girlfriend was also in court to support him. He was not granted bond, and his next court date is expected to be in February. Previously, Carlos Withers, 21, of High Point, and Edward Trey Lindsay III, 24, also of High Point, were charged in connection to the case. The shooting broke out just after midnight Aug. 2 at what an attendee called a summer finale party for teenagers, and police believe it was targeted. Nine people went to the hospital and one was treated on the scene. Howard is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
