Fire crews were barely finishing up their first call of the morning when another structure fire came across the radio around 5:30 a.m. — keeping firefighters busy before most folks had their coffee.

The second call sent multiple units to the 600 block of Ringgold Church Road, where firefighters found a residential structure with no visible signs of fire from the street.

According to the fire department, the homeowner told crews they were awakened by a smoke detector and discovered an active fire on the exterior of the home.

The homeowner used a garden hose to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived.

Engine 233 arrived first and crews began an extensive overhaul operation, checking for hidden fire and working to ensure the scene was safe. Firefighters also ventilated the home.

A smoke detector made the difference this morning — waking the homeowner before a small fire could become a much bigger emergency.
