Google is the company evaluating Wood Haven Technology Park for a potential data center, the Western Virginia Regional Industrial Facility Authority confirmed Friday.

The announcement ends weeks of speculation around the 94-acre site at the Interstate 81/581 junction, jointly owned by Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem. Google, operating as Clearview Dynamics, is in a due diligence and inspection period expected to run through March 2027. Roanoke County leaders said they knew it was Google throughout the latest iteration of the project. "At least in order of magnitude this would represent the largest industrial project in the county's history and at least the Roanoke Valley's history as well," said County Administrator Richard Caywood, adding that having Google's name attached to the project is a huge plus.

Roanoke Mayor Joe Cobb pointed to the long-term economic impact, from construction jobs to permanent on-site employees and community giving. "Google has more than 20 years of experience responsibly building data centers and is proud of the relationships we've built in the Roanoke community," said Google Regional Public Affairs Manager Clay Allsop. The Wood Haven site, about 14 miles from Google's Botetourt County campus at Greenfield announced last year, would use Spring Hollow Reservoir as its water source. The due diligence process includes engineering and geotechnical assessments, utility capacity studies and environmental reviews.
