One of the most watched state Senate races in North Carolina will be decided today, with Democrat Steve Luking, a doctor, and Republican Sam Page, the former Rockingham County sheriff, competing for the District 26 seat. Page defeated incumbent Phil Berger in the primary.

District 26 covers Rockingham County and parts of Guilford County. Polls are open until 7:30 p.m., and North Carolina voters are also deciding a U.S. Senate seat, 14 U.S. House seats, 50 state Senate seats, 120 state House seats, a state Supreme Court associate justice seat and three appeals judges, along with county and municipal races including sheriffs and school boards. Statewide referenda on voter ID, property taxes and income taxes are also on the ballot.

Statewide results could be delayed: the State Board of Elections said early-voting results may not be released until about 8:15 p.m. because of technical issues at precincts in a handful of counties and extended voting hours at a few locations. Rockingham County's Board of Elections voted in October to begin counting early-voting ballots at 5 p.m. at its office in Reidsville, with officials emphasizing that results would not be announced before polls close.
