Nelson Traffic Alert | FedEx Double-Trailer Catches Fire Near NC-Virginia Line, Forces US 220 Detour

ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, N.C. — A FedEx tractor-trailer hauling two trailers caught fire near the North Carolina-Virginia line, forcing a temporary detour of southbound US 220 and keeping emergency crews busy for several hours.

The fire broke out in the first trailer of the double-trailer rig while it was traveling near US 220.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene to investigate the incident.

Firefighters from the Stoneville Volunteer Fire Department, Madison Volunteer Fire Department and Northwest Volunteer Fire Department worked to extinguish the blaze, while N.C. Department of Transportation crews assisted with the response and cleanup.

The fire was eventually brought under control, but the incident left debris and other materials that had to be removed from the roadway.

Crews remained on scene for several hours as they worked to clean up the mess and make the highway safe for motorists.

During the response and cleanup, southbound US 220 traffic was detoured around the scene, causing delays for drivers traveling through the area.

The cause of the fire and the extent of any damage to the cargo had not been released.

No injuries were immediately reported.

One tractor, two trailers and one stubborn fire turned into several hours of work for firefighters, deputies and highway crews.
