Reidsville is one step closer to getting a new elementary school after receiving a $42 million grant last year. According to Rockingham County Schools, demolition work has begun on the old South End Elementary School on South Park Drive, where the mobile units have been torn down and crews are working to clean up debris.

Once demolition is complete, construction of the new Reidsville Elementary School will begin. The new school will be able to accommodate 650 students.

The project is part of a $42 million grant funded by the North Carolina Education Lottery through Needs-Based Public School Capital, which is helping facilitate the consolidation of schools in Rockingham County. The consolidation involves four schools. The new Reidsville Elementary School will serve students from the old South End Elementary School and Moss Street Elementary School. Moss Street, which was built in the 1960s, will be converted into a pre-K and alternative school, leading to the closure and accommodation of Booker T. Washington Elementary School.
