Rockingham County voters will select a new sheriff for the first time in almost three decades, with Republican Billy Parker, Democrat Franklin Moore and unaffiliated candidate Ryan Young on Tuesday's ballot. Longtime Sheriff Sam Page retired and is running for a North Carolina Senate seat.

Parker was sworn in as interim sheriff on Aug. 3. He is a U.S. Air Force veteran, a retired captain with the Rockingham County Sheriff's Office and spent more than a decade in the district attorney's office. He said his top priorities are children and combating drugs, along with sex offenders, and he has the endorsement of retired Sheriff Page. Moore has more than 30 years in law enforcement, including service as a Rockingham County deputy and police officer in Stoneville, Mayodan and Madison, and 16 years as Stoneville's police chief; his campaign focuses on safety, accountability and technology. Young, a former Graham police officer with more than a decade of experience, launched a nonprofit that fights human trafficking and qualified for the ballot through a petition that exceeded the roughly 3,000-signature threshold for unaffiliated sheriff candidates. He describes himself as an unaffiliated conservative focused on integrity, community and service.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3. The winner will lead a sheriff's office that has known only one sheriff since 1998.
