— Talk about a terrible way to start a Saturday.
An apartment building in Rockingham County was destroyed by fire early Saturday morning, leaving eight people without a place to live.
The Oregon Hill Volunteer Fire Department said crews were dispatched around 2 a.m. to a structure fire in the 6600 block of North Carolina Highway 700 in Ruffin.
When firefighters arrived, they were dealing with a fire that would ultimately destroy all eight units in the building.
Fire officials said the entire second floor was gutted, while the first floor suffered severe water damage.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
By the time firefighters were finished, eight apartments were destroyed — meaning eight households went to bed Friday night with a home and woke up Saturday with nowhere to go.
No injuries, but eight families displaced and an entire apartment building gone. That's one Saturday morning nobody wanted.
