Twain Lumber plans $7.4 million reopening of former Teal Jones sawmill in Henry County

Twain Lumber Company will invest $7.4 million to buy and reopen the former Teal Jones sawmill in Henry County's Horsepasture District, creating 74 new jobs, Gov. Abigail Spanberger's office announced on Sept. 10.

The company, based in Antlers, Oklahoma, produces dimensional Southern Yellow Pine lumber. The state says Twain plans to install new production machinery and upgrade equipment, with the mill able to reach about 108 million board feet a year at full capacity. Over the next three years the company expects to buy more than $51.2 million in Virginia-grown forest products, a figure that matters for loggers and landowners across Southside.

State support includes a $150,000 performance-based grant from the Governor's Agriculture and Forestry Industries Development Fund, a $150,000 Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission agribusiness grant, and $59,200 in workforce training support through the Virginia Jobs Investment Program. The Virginia Economic Development Partnership, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and the Martinsville-Henry County Economic Development Corporation worked on the project.

The announcement did not include a reopening date or hiring timeline. Job seekers should watch for postings from Twain Lumber and the Martinsville-Henry County EDC.
